The University of Maryland Is Celebrating Jim Henson!


Jarrod Fairclough – Hardcore Muppet fans will know that Jim Henson attended the University of Maryland between 1954 and 1960, and that the school even erected a wonderful statue in 2003 that celebrates Jim and Kermit the Frog.  Well, now thanks in part to our pal JD Hansel of, the University is taking some time out to celebrate the guy we all love so much.

In dates scattered between April 25th to May 3rd, the University is hosting showings of some of Jim’s more experimental work, as well as hosting a conversation with Brian Jay Jones, author of the popular Jim Henson biography.  All these events are free and open to the public, but note that it’s first come first served, so don’t delay.

An Academic Eye on Jim Henson: A Conversation with Two Brians
The Program in Film Studies will be hosting a public discussion with Brian Jay Jones, author of the New York Times bestseller Jim Henson: The Biography, and Brian Real, a University of Maryland professor who teaches a course on Jim Henson. This event will assess Jim Henson’s work within the greater context of the history of film and television, with a focus on changes in the entertainment industry. The discussion will be moderated by J. D. Hansel, editor of the Jim Henson fan website and host of its podcasts.

Rainbow Connections: Jim Henson – Commercials & Experiments
Karen Falk, Director of Archives at the Jim Henson Company, will be presenting rarely seen materials from the Henson vault, including experimental films, TV commercials, and productions he started as a student at the University of Maryland. Dedicated fans of Henson’s work may recognize this event as an updated version of the Jim Henson Legacy’s “Jim Henson: Commercials & Experiments” compilation screening, now revised and remastered in HD.
