Jarrod Fairclough – If there’s something we can all agree on, it’s that Sesame Street is awesome. If there’s another thing we can agree on, it’s that bullies are not awesome. So Sesame Street have opened up a Kickstarter campaign, focusing on anti-bullying, especially towards those with Autism, just like Julia.
The excerpt below from the Kickstarter description explains just a little about why this cause is so important:
An estimated one in 68 children in the United States is on the autism spectrum. While the diagnosis is common, public understanding of autism is not. Research shows that children with autism are five times more likely to be bullied than their neurotypical peers.
In storybooks, articles, videos, and Sesame Street episodes, we’ve worked to support families of autistic children and reduce the isolating stigmas and misconceptions that still surround autism. But now, we’re at a critical turning point. The Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children initiative has made great strides with support from our existing partners, but to tackle the next big topic – how to prevent bullying by fostering empathy and compassion – we need you.
You also may be asking why HBO or PBS can’t fund Sesame Street’s campaign. Well, they’ve explained that, too:
We’ve always been a completely independent nonprofit organization. Distribution partners like HBO, PBS, and YouTube help us make Sesame Street available to kids and families everywhere. We’re sustained by a combination of donations, grants, and licensing revenue from toys and products, all of which we reinvest to create more Sesame Street programming and resources. Initiatives like See Amazing in All Children are only possible because of charitable giving from members of our community who love what we do.
The campaign, which aims to raise $75,000 in just 30 days, will fund work and research with top experts, as well as information and articles that address their goal. Most importantly, the funds will go towards a brand new storybook starring Julia and the Sesame Street characters, as well as an audiobook with the Muppet performers, and internationally translated versions as well.
Of course, no Kickstarter would be complete without the Rewards. They include phone wallpapers, early editions of the promised new book, a Julia plush, a signed copy of Cookie Monster’s new book, a personal video from Julia and her Muppet pals, and a portrait of you with Julia and another character!
So dig deep and give to this amazing cause.
