APRIL FOOLS!
Our new friends Coca Cola are arguably the most successful company in the world, so it makes sense that it would intersect with one of the most successful franchises in the world at some point. Since the very first episode of Sesame Street, Coke and Muppets have gone together like Bert and Ernie! Here’s just a few of the Muppet-Coke connections over the years…
In the very first test pilot for Sesame Street, a short film showed circles in the world. These circles included Coca Cola bottle caps! I wonder of Bert collected them afterwards…
In a later episode of Sesame Street, Gordon and a young boy parody the famous Mean Joe Green Coca Cola video, where Gordon throws his towel, which has a number 7 on it.
In a Season 4 episode of The Muppet Show, Fozzie jokes that Kermit’s favorite drink is Croak-A-Cola, which was also to be the name of our contest that kicked off this whole Muppet Mindset/Coca Cola partnership!
In 1983, Miss Piggy appeared in a calendar parodying several famous images. One image parodied the Coca Cola Haddon Sundblom pin ups, with Piggy as a mechanic at a gas station which sold Coke!
In The Muppets Take Manhattan, Pete’s Luncheonette features a Coca Cola soda fountain and a Coca Cola sign. This was not product placement, just the film makers agreeing that Coca Cola brings refreshment and flavor.
Finally, in the 2011 film The Muppets, 80’s Robot offers Kermit, Walter, Mary and Gary a TAB or a New Coke, both delicious Coca Cola beverages of the 1980’s. We’ll take one, 80’s Robot!
